Why Study Health Information Management?

The Health Information Management (HIM) program at Central Oregon Community College prepares students for local or national employment opportunities in the medical field, information management and computer technology. It includes more than 40 work settings and more than 125 job titles. Salaries are continually increasing due to the high demand for HIM professionals.

The Health Information Management Program guides and supports students to gain the knowledge, skills, and experience to successfully enter the Health Information Management professional workforce.

HIM Program Objectives

Professional Behavior and Ethics

Upon completion of the HIM program, our graduates will demonstrate behavior consistent with the AHIMA Code of Ethics.

Health Informatics

Upon completion of the HIM program, our graduates will be able to demonstrate the use of data and analytics in the quality improvement process in order to meet the needs of the changing health care environment.

Applied Skills

Upon completion of the HIM program, our graduates will be able to apply principals of anatomy, physiology, diagnosis/procedural coding, and billing and reimbursement within an electronic environment.

Leadership

Upon completion of the HIM program, our graduates will be able to utilize leadership skills to facilitate change, build teams, mentor and engage stakeholders in the healthcare environment.

Technical Writing

Upon completion of the HIM program, our graduates will be able to apply professional writing skills to create documents relative to health information management.

Communication

Upon completion of the HIM program, our graduates will be able to communicate with others in a collaborative and professional manner in order to foster a mutually supportive environment.

ACCREDITATION

CAHIIM Accreditation

The Health Information Management Program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

*Graduates of the COCC HIM program with an AAS degree in Health Information Management are eligible to take the national credential exam for Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
